Both last night and today we sent out scouts, into worlds both real and virtual, to gauge the buzz about Leopard on the street and on the Intertubes. What we found was plenty of activity, a lot of very high expectations, and a healthy (is that the right word?) collection of pirated copies already online.
Leopard roars on BitTorrent
BitTorrent was the first thing we checked, and to no one's surprise, Leopard is readily available to anyone who wants to 'pirate' it. We found torrents with hundreds of seeders and thousands of leechers. It appears that the gold master copy made its way on to BitTorrent by Thursday morning, in fact, more than 24 hours before launch. We did a little trolling around the world of IRC this morning to ask the question: are you a dirty pirate, or a clean-but-otherwise still-piratical Mac fan? I jest, but the gist of our question was: why are so many people pirating a $129 OS upgrade? Surely all are loyal to The Steve?
The answers ran the gamut from the pointless ('I don't even have a Mac, but I want the ISO') to the more pressing (one man, Barc, told us he pirated Leopard so he could upgrade his parent's iMac before heading back to school in time for the weekend—good to see he has his priorities straight). What was astounding: a full 80 percent of those we talked to (in all, about 30 people) said that despite grabbing Leopard off BitTorrent, they a) had already ordered a copy that wasn't in yet, or b) were planning on buying one regardless. In other words, BitTorrent activity was high, but as we have seen so often, it's not indicative of how many people are taking Leopard without paying for it.
As one user said, 'BitTorrent delivers faster than FedEx, dude.'
Apple Stores buzzing
In the Boston Metro region, Apple Stores are buzzing with business, but it's nothing like the iPhone launch. With no worries about Leopard selling out, only the hardcore faithful came out last night, but that still meant little room for movement in the Cambridge Apple store. North Shore was busy, too, but Burlington's otherwise sleepy store had a strong share of shoppers. A 'genius' at the store told me that the buzz around Leopard has brought in plenty of PC users to the store.
Jade reports from San Francisco:
It was déjà Apple vu at 1 Stockton Street, reminiscent of iPhone day, though the first in line for Leopard had been standing a mere three hours instead of thirty. Nonetheless, the line extended hundreds of feet by the time those glass doors opened. As with previous iterations of OS X, users of all kinds—Graybeards, Switchers, Adders, Halo Affected—had come together to embrace the Mac Way: spending $129 for something shiny. I spent some time walking the line, asking Mac users and the bemused passersby what it was all about.
Down the Street

A middle-aged woman with an iPod in the crush outside the doors caught my eye. She was raising up on her toes, trying to see inside the store.
'Are there new iPods?' she asked.
'No, people are waiting for Mac OS X Leopard, the most impressive version of Mac OS X yet. Are you planning to upgrade?'
'I have a Sony laptop. But I really like my nano,' she replied and walked on.
Well, at least the seed had been planted. The harvest was only a matter of time.
There were plenty of guys that looked kind of like the Mac guy from the commercials, and one of them amused me.
'Are you here for Leopard?'
'Yeah.'
'You know, you could probably pick up a copy down the street at the CompUSA without having to wait in line. So why come here and stand around for an hour or more?'
He shrugged. 'I don't have anywhere else to be.'
Spoken like a true nerd on a Friday night.
Taken seconds before the glass stairs collapsed
The next guy that said something funny wasn't there for Leopard. He was like 70 years old and smelled like a library and poached eggs. He wore a brown leisure suit, probably the same one he had been wearing since 1980.
'Hi, I was wondering if are you here to buy Leopard?'
'Huh? What's that?'
'Leopard is the next generation operating system for Mac computers.'
'You say Lepers?'
'No, not people with an infectious disease. Leopard, like the big cat, like a lion, or tiger, or jaguar—leopard—rowr.' I made a little motion like a cat pawing the air.
'A cat? I don't get it. What's it do?'
'It has 300+ new features that make using a Mac better than ever!'
'How much does it cost?'
'$129.'
'$129?! That's crazy!'
Yeah, if you grew up during the Depression, maybe so.

Tyler Howarth—I hope I got the name right—is first!
The last guy that said something amusing was standing across the street.
'Isn't it beautiful? All these people coming together to share in something that brings them joy.'
'Losers,' he replied, and shook his head.
Well, yeah, that too, I thought, but Steve Ballmer would kill to have losers like these waiting to buy a new release of Windows off the shelf. That hasn't happened since 1995. It will be happening again for Apple in about two years. Let the countdown begin.
Jacqui reports from Chicago:
Chicago's Michigan Avenue line was filled with much less enthusiastic waiters than the San Francisco store, it seems. Either that, or everyone was too distracted by the wind and rain—the weather hadn't gotten cold all month until a bunch of nerds had to wait outside of an Apple Store.
The first group of people in line was too distracted to talk to us—they were busy being filmed by a local news crew for being hardcore enough to be first. Listen folks: I was first in line for the Tiger launch—look where I am now.
These people will all be C-list celebrities one day, and they know it.
Like the San Francisco store, the line wrapped around the corner and down the block.
Tourists, tired from a day of maxing out their credit cards on Michigan Avenue, stopped by the line to inquire why so many people would wait out in the cold. An older couple wearing fur coats with heavy southern accents came up.
'We're from out of town! Do you mahhnd tellin' us what y'all are waiting for?'
'Mac OS X Leopard.'
'Is that a computer?'
'No, it's an operating system.'
'Operatin' system? What's that?'

'Well, you know Windows? It's like that.'
Girl behind us: 'BUT BETTER!'
Ars reader Jake Basham flicked a cigarette on the ground. 'F-ing tourists.'
Our cynical partner in crime
30 minutes of listening to the groups around us scream and cheer and fall over each other to get in front of the news cameras later, we were in the store and got what we had come for: t-shirts.
Just kidding. We picked up Leopard too.
Mostly smooth sailing

We've heard mostly success stories on the upgrade, but The Register is pointing to an Apple Support forum thread that shows several users having supposed 'blue screen of death' problems. Some users are finding that upon reboot, their machines aren't fully booting into user mode, hanging at a blue screen indefinitely. A third-party tool called APE (Application Enhancer) appears to be the culprit, and we advise APE users to proceed with caution.
